The Swiss Stage continues at the 2024 LoL World Championship. From October 3 to 7 and October 10 to 13, we will learn the names of the 8 participants advancing to the Knockout Stage (playoffs).

LoL World Championship 2024: Swiss Stage Day 3

Today, October 5, there will be only two matches in the 2-0 bracket of the Swiss Stage. However, the importance of these matches cannot be overstated.

The winners of each game will advance to the playoffs of LoL Worlds 2024. The losers will still have two more chances to qualify for the main stage of the tournament and reach at least the Top 8 of this year's World Championship. DPlus KIA vs. LNG Esports (Oct 5, 14:00 CET)

The first match on the schedule for the LoL World Championship 2024 Swiss Stage will be DPlus KIA (LCK) vs. LNG Esports (LPL). The format of the match is best-of-three (bo3).

This match is interesting for several reasons. First, and most obviously, the winner will become the first team to reach the Knockout Stage (Playoffs), a symbolic achievement. Second, the storyline and mathematical factors play a significant role in this match. Simply put, DPlus KIA is extremely lucky.

It’s not that LNG Esports is a weak team or that they randomly ended up in this match—quite the opposite. But among the three possible matchups for DPlus KIA, LNG is the most favorable opponent. The Top 3 Korean team could have faced HLE or Gen.G, to whom they lost in the LCK Summer 2024, but the draw matched them with LNG Esports. Additionally, DPlus KIA has already played two matches against Western teams (against Fnatic in the first round with a 1 in 3 chance and against FlyQuest with a 2 in 7 chance). What's more, if they beat LNG Esports, DPlus KIA will be guaranteed not to face HLE or Gen.G until the grand final of Worlds 2024.

The second and final match of the LoL World Championship 2024 schedule will be Hanwha Life Esports vs. Gen.G. And this match is no less exciting than the DPlus KIA vs. LNG Esports matchup.

As mentioned earlier, the winner of this series advances to the Knockout Stage (Playoffs), with a best-of-three format. Truth be told, this spot holds no special significance for either team, as both clubs are well-positioned for it. After all, what else would you expect from the champion and runner-up of the LCK Summer 2024?

Yes, the Hanwha Life Esports vs. Gen.G match will be a rematch of the LCK Summer 2024 grand final from September 8, 2024. Back then, HLE “stole” the victory from Gen.G in a shocking 3-2 win.

Though it might seem like nothing drastic happened, the loss in the LCK Summer 2024 grand final was a bitter blow for Gen.G. Before that, they had won the LCK Spring 2024 and the Mid-Season Invitational 2024, meaning a victory in the LCK Summer 2024 was essential for their potential Golden Road (winning all major Riot Games titles in a year).

Last year, JD Gaming came very close to completing the Golden Road, but T1 stopped them, and this year, they aren’t at the LoL World Championship. Not drawing any conclusions here, but the parallels are hard to miss.
